For NNF’s 250th anniversary festival in 2022, Malachy was the project manager for several exciting, large-scale projects, as well as providing key support for other festival projects. The projects that Malachy took a lead on were varied and came with wide-ranging responsibilities and challenges:
Unfurl
Unfurl by Air Giants was an interactive installation consisting of several large inflatable robots that used sensors and AI to move and interact with audiences in the space. Over 2000 people experienced the work over a weekend, making it a hugely popular event for the festival. Malachy also worked with Air Giants to implement a ‘relaxed hour’ where disabled audience members could come and experience the work before it opened to the general public.
Peaceophobia
Fuel Theatre and Common Wealth’s Peaceophobia was a site-specific piece of theatre that took place in a multi-storey car park. Malachy lead on the project for the festival which involved collaborating with Norwich City Council to locate and secure a suitable car park for the piece, then working closely with NCC, Fuel and NNF’s production teams to facilitate getting the show into the space. Malachy was then on the ground during the get-in to support Fuel’s technical team, as well as supporting the performances by managing a group of volunteers and event staff to ensure the smooth running of each show.
Signal On Sea
Malachy project managed Strijbos Van Rijswijk’s Signal on Sea. Jeroen Strijbos and Rob van Rijswijk are sound artists from The Netherlands who have been performing all over the world for more than 10 years, immersing well known places in sounds and music. For Norfolk & Norwich Festival, they composed a piece to be played via 20 long-throw speakers, transforming a large stretch of Great Yarmouth beach. On the final two days of the festival, two site-specific performances accompanied the installation where live sopranos provided a captivating promenade performance within the installation.
Malachy worked closely with Great Yarmouth Borough Council and the artists to prepare for the installation and performances, as well as with the RSPB and Natural England to ensure that it didn’t disrupt the surrounding natural habitats. He facilitated site visits and an R&D week for the artists in Great Yarmouth where they spent time developing the work. Malachy also worked with the council to ensure there was a beach wheelchair on site at all times to make the piece accessible for wheelchair users.
The Garden Party
Malachy’s final project was the Garden Party, a mini-festival over a weekend which showcased 8 new Without Walls shows. The shows ranged from theatre and circus, to dance and even an escape room, and they took place in a city park alongside street food vendors and workshops for families. Malachy oversaw the Garden Party, working with Norwich City Council, the Festival’s technical team, the artists and producers, food vendors and workshop providers to deliver the event to record numbers of people. Malachy lead on the accessibility of the Garden Party, working with the companies to encourage them to consider access provision within their piece, and then organising provision such as BSL interpretation where needed.
Rider Spoke
In 2021 Malachy line-produced a tour of Blast Theory’s Rider Spoke as part of Norfolk County Council’s initiative to boost local tourism to the North Norfolk coast. Rider Spoke is a project by Blast Theory which mixes art, theatre and location-based technologies. It invites audiences to cycle through the streets of a town, guided by a smart phone attached to their bicycle.
